October is a favorite month for us pet lovers! National Pet Wellness Month gives us the perfect opportunity to focus on our beloved four-legged family members and ensure they lead healthy, happy lives. Our pets bring us joy, companionship, and unconditional love, so it’s only fair that we return the favor by prioritizing their well-being. The PCS team gathered our top tips on how to keep our pets healthy and happy!
Schedule Annual Exams
It’s easy to assume that if your pet is acting fine, they are in perfect health. However, many pets instinctively hide signs of pain or illness, which means health problems can go unnoticed until they’re more serious. Routine check-ups give your veterinarian the chance to catch issues early, prevent future problems, and keep your pet feeling their best. Most pets should have an annual exam, while senior pets may need visits every six months. These checkups ensure your pet stays current on vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental health, and nutrition.
Maintain a Routine
Consistently following a set feeding, exercise, and play schedule can promote a sense of security and predictability for your pet, easing anxiety and stress. It can also help teach certain animals, like dogs, necessary skills and positive behaviors. For example, incorporating daily brushing into your routine will help them get more comfortable with being handled.
Offer a Balanced Diet
Obesity can shorten a pet’s life, making it important to ensure their diet is well-balanced and appropriate for their age, size, and breed. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations for high-quality pet food and follow portion sizes. And remember – treats should be used sparingly!
Exercise Pets Regularly
Like humans, pets need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and stay active. Set aside time for play and walks to keep your pet physically fit and mentally stimulated. Interactive toys and games can make exercise fun for both you and your pet.
Groom, Groom, Groom
Your pet’s coat, skin and nails need tender love and care to keep them comfortable and healthy. Whether you utilize a professional groomer or do it at home, regular brushing, nail trimming, and bathing are part of good pet care. Plus, grooming sessions can double as opportunities to check for fleas, ticks, and skin issues.
Don’t Skip Socialization
Introducing your pet to new people, places, and experiences early on in their lives is one of the best ways to prevent behavioral issues down the road. It also helps them feel more comfortable in everyday situations – like trips to the vet or car rides. Dogs especially thrive when given opportunities to safely interact with other people and animals.
Keep in mind that socialization should always be gradual. Never force your pet into a situation if they seem fearful or anxious. Signs such as excessive barking, growling, or tucking their tail are signals that they need a break. With patience and consistency, socialization can set the foundation for a confident, well-adjusted pet.
Invest Time Towards Dental Care
Poor oral health can lead to serious health issues down the line for your pet. Make it a priority to brush your pet’s teeth regularly and provide healthy dental chews or toys to help prevent dental problems.
Pay Attention to Signs of Illness
Learn to recognize the signs of illness or discomfort in your pet. Changes in behavior, appetite, or appearance can indicate underlying health issues. Promptly consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
