As you navigate your own grief following the loss of your beloved pet, you may notice some changes in the behavior of the other pets in your home as they express their own sorrow. This behavior might include pacing, changes in appetite or routinely visiting their passed pal’s favorite spot.
It is important to do your best to show compassion and support your pets through these hard times. Here are some tips:
Give Them What They Need:
Pets, like humans, have their own distinct personalities. Some may prefer to spend time alone in times of hardship whereas others may need that extra bit of attention. Listen to your pets and what they are telling you.
However, if they begin to beg for attention and whine when you cease, do not comfort them with treats or more attention as these are bad behaviors that you do not want to reinforce. Although it may be hard, ignore bad habits and continue to reward good ones.
Develop / Maintain a Routine:
Grief takes time. Experts say that a common window for pets to go through the cycle of grief and return to normalcy is roughly 6 months. During these first few months, it can be beneficial to keep certain things consistent in your pet’s routine. This can be when you feed them, let them out, and the route you take on walks. There is a lot of comfort in what is familiar.
Try New Things:
Although this may sound contradictory, just as it is important to maintain a routine, it is equally important to try new things with your pets—when they are ready. Start small by taking them to get a new toy or a pup cup. You can gradually work your way up to playdates with other furry friends or exploring a new place like a park or pet-friendly beach.
Know When To Seek Professional Help:
If your pet’s condition does improve within a few months or he or she begins to show physical symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or complete loss of appetite, then contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Listen to what your pets are telling you and give them time as you both grieve. Loss is difficult to navigate both for you and your four-legged family. Don’t forget to take care of yourself so that you are able to provide love and compassion for your pets that need you.
