June is National Foster a Pet Month, a month dedicated to pet fostering nationwide to share information and raise awareness about the benefits of fostering animals. In honor of this holiday, we are are happy to share our tips on how to become a foster pet parent and shine a the light on one of our foster favorite organizations: Gigi’s.
Fostering is a temporary arrangement that involves caring for pets until they’re ready to be adopted. Many people avoid fostering because they don’t know how or jump into it without having the correct information–which doesn’t help the thousands of homeless animals in the country.
Why do animals need foster care?
There are several possible reasons:
- Foster care can help save an animal’s life when a shelter is full.
- Some animals don’t do well in a shelter environment because they are frightened or need a little extra care.
- Some animals need time to recover from an illness or injury before adoption.
Whatever the reason, these animals need some extra love and care before they can be adopted. Providing foster care for a few days, weeks, or months can be a lifesaving gift for an animal.
Why should I consider fostering a pet?
There are many benefits for both pets and humans when fostering a pet. Some animals in shelter homes have behavioral and socialization issues and a fostering environment can give them a chance to be prepared for adoption.
The reward of giving an animal a second chance at a home and life will bring joy and fulfillment to any foster parent–a win-win for everyone involved.
